Gregor and his last bite

I finished book five in The Underland series, Gregor and the Code of Claw, by Suzanne Collins.  This has been quite an accomplishment as I read the whole series with 3 fantastic 5th grade boy readers.  They’ve loved this series, reading each one in a quick span of about 2 weeks, which is an excellent triumph.  Along the way each young man created a plausible character would they be lucky enough to exist in the Underland world.  At our last meeting they were so animated about discussing the series and that there is not a sixth book that I charged them with appealing to Suzanne Collins to continue the series with just one more book.  Like a dying man to water they all agreed how it would help them to know how Gregor is faring and if Luxa and Ripred are holding to their bond.

As a teacher and a reader I am overjoyed by their display of emotion over the book.  I love that they get to know Suzanne Collins through this work as well as The Hunger Games. We’ve discussed such deep topics through this series; war and peace, what it means to be a warrior, how does this compare to our war-plagued world today, and the mind-set of a soldier during battle and after.  Whew.  These conversations have spilled over into guns and why we need to have guns in our homes.  One of my three shared that his mother almost shot him one night as he came in late through the front door of their trailer.  Guns.  But this blog post isn’t about guns so much as it is about cookies.  Not to {ever}make light of guns but honestly we need cookies more.

In one poignant scene as Gregor is preparing for battle, one in which he believes he is doomed to die, he eats one last cookie made by his kind neighbor Mrs. Cormaci.  It’s an oatmeal raisin cookie and that cookie got me to thinking about last bites.  Not a last meal, mind you, but just a taste of one last thing-what would it be?    For Gregor he was very excited to have that cookie in hand.

I’m going to make these oatmeal cranberry cookies (cuz if it were my bite I would prefer cranberry over raisin) and Martha does it best.  I’m going to bring these to book club this week as we have our final conversation about The Underland Chronicles,  we find a way to mail our letters to Suzanne Collins and we pick our last book of the year.

Weekend Cookies;Cherry Oatmeal Cookies Variation

Happy Birthday to my husband, Gregory!  It’s a big one and he’s not all that excited about it.  I made him a special breakfast this morning of grits, Fresh Air bacon, scrambled eggs, and biscuits and peppery gravy.  He was in heaven with all his favorite breakfast foods at the table.

Last night I made these cookies for him because he loves oatmeal cookies.  They are delicious and next time I would double the recipe.  The directions say it makes 50 cookies-I beg to differ-as I even made mine nearly bite-sized as I could see the dough disappearing.

Adapted from So Sweet! Cookies, Cupcakes, Whoopie Pies, and More by Sur La Table.  (This book was well worth the $11 I paid for it and I notice it is less than $10 on Amazon now)

Cherry Oatmeal Cookies
(makes about 50 cookies) (makes about 30 cookies)

Ingredients
1/2 cup (1 Stick) unsalted butter, softened
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/4 cup plus 1 T. granulated sugar
1 large egg
1 tsp pure vanilla
1 cup unbleached all-purpose flour
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp baking powder
1/4 salt
3/4 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
3/4 cup dried sour cherries

1. Preheat oven to 350*F and position rack in the center.  Line 2 baking sheets with parchment.  (I used my silicone mat)
2. Place the butter, brown sugar, and white sugar in the bowl of a standing mixer and beat on medium speed until smooth. Scrape the bowl well.  Add the egg and vanilla and blend well.
3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.  Add to the butter mixture all at once.  Turn the mixer to the lowest speed and blend slowly, just until there are no  more patches of flour.  Scrape down the bowl.
4. Add the oats and cherries and blend on low until just combined.  Remove the bowl from mixer and stir gently a few times to make sure everything is incorporated.
5. Using a small ice cream scoop or a spoon, portion tablespoon-sized mounds (I did teaspoon size) onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.  Bake the cookies for 13-16 minutes, until cookies are golden brown at the edges and still a bit pale in the center.  Transfer to a cooking rack and let the cookies cool.

I did not have dried sour cherries in the house but I did have raisins and dried cranberries.  My husband loves oatmeal raisin cookies and I tossed caution to the wind by adding the cranberries as well.  He loved them-the cranberries add a snap.  I would like to try the dried cherries at some point but who needs a trip to the grocery store for just one ingredient??  These cookies were very quick to make-perfect for time-crunched baking.  Enjoy!

28 Days of Things I Love; #3

I love milk and cookies! 

 It is my favorite dessert. I’ve even ordered it in a restaurant.  I prefer really good homemade chocolate chip cookies but others will suffice. I like to dunk into a mini-coffee mug instead of a glass because I don’t need a lot of milk and the cookies fit better. The only brand of store bought cookies we buy are Matt’s, which have the same ingredients on the package as what I use in the kitchen.  Just thinking about it makes me want to dunk a coupla’ cookies!  

This dessert was a favorite of my dad’s and I can still see him at the head of our kitchen table with some of my mom’s cookies lined up ready for dunking.  His second favorite dessert was chocolate cake in a bowl of milk.  Yep. I love that also.  Just perfect.  Milk and cookies. Milk and chocolate cake.  Ahhh.

When I googled an image for this post Jana’s blog, Milk and Cookies, came up repeatedly!  No wonder I love reading her sweet blog.

Simply Monday

We made chocolate chip cookies at our house tonight.  Groovy Girl and I owed Teenage Boy a batch because he walked her and two friends over to the cemetery on Saturday at dusk.  We live across from a cemetery and this is a favorite “challenge” activity when friends sleep over.  He remembers doing this when he was in middle school with a group of his friends.  To thank him for following through we made him the cookies. He’s been eating them while he watches football and reads Inheritance, last in his favorite Eragon series..

I just made the recipe on the back of the Nestle package (yes, every once in awhile non-organic lands in my grocery cart-I don’t know how?)  because it was there and easy.  I know I have several good recipes but I’ve never hit on one that was so amazing that I have to make that one ALL the time, they all seem to be pretty similar.  Do you have a favorite chocolate chip recipe?  If so, please share.

My kitchen’s not clean but the cookies are done.  Dinner was easy. My kids are happy.  Groovy Girl and I had a serious conversation about an article in her Discovery Girls magazine.  About bras. Ugh.  She’s worried because other girls in her class have started wearing them.  Double ugh.

When I went up to get her headed toward sleep she was dancing wildly to one of her Taylor Swift CD’s, lucky for her she was already in her pajamas with her teeth brushed.  We read the last half of The Snow Queen by Amy Ehrlich and talked for a few minutes.  She wanted to share one of Taylor’s songs with me.  It’s a sweet song and it made us hug repeatedly.  Listen to it; Never Grow Up, not an official video but still a good.

A Whirlwind Celebration

The birthday week started off with a matching sleep outfit for Groovy Girl and her matching A.G. doll.  She was so excited about this gift she put her pajamas on at 6:30 in the evening!!  Who would know that was the trick for an early bedtime!
Her actual birthday morning started with homemade waffles, warm maple syrup and fresh whipped cream!  Don’t bother looking at the messy kitchen table–it’s an active week with no time for clearing off the table.  To the right you can see the magical bonsai tree my handsome husband gave me for my August birthday.  I’m happy to say the bonsai is doing well.  I haven’t killed it off yet.
Here she is on her way to her afternoon piano lessons on her birthday-I just like the outfit and her smile shows she’s had a fabulous day.  Sharing Matt’s Cookies at school with her classmates was one highlight for her!  She is a girl on the go!  This weekend she goes back to ice skating class and she wants to try a new gymnastics studio.  
When I look at my big 9-year-old what I really see is this baby girl.  She came into this world as a 3-lb fairy doll, barely filling out her preemie wardrobe and now she is the whirlwind above.  Life truly is a blessing.

Feature Friday

I have three picture books to feature today because I fell in love with them just this morning!  It is the month of love so I give you three books you shouldn’t live without…

1.  The Circus Ship by Chris Van Dusen (2009)

I’m not a fan of the circus-the kind that uses animals to entertain so I wasn’t exactly sure how I was going to feel about this book, until I read it of course.  It is a delight!  It rhymes.  When a storm ruins the ship the captain saves the the mean and greedy circus boss, Mr. Paine, who chooses to leave the animals behind to save his own.  The animals swim to an island beach, taking refuge with the local people, who are at first scared and then learn to love having the animals around.  The circus animals win their freedom from the demanding circus boss through a great hide and seek scene.  The illustrations are larger-than-life beautiful and it is loosely based on a real event.  5 stars
2.  “I have a Little Problem,” said the bear by Heinz Janisch and Silke Leffler (2007)
Bear wanders in to town to get help but noone listens to his problem.  The inventor, the tailor, the hatter, the doctor, the street vendor, the eye doctor, the shopkeeper, and the shoe maker all jump to their own conclusions.  Noone even listens to what it is until bear meets a curious fly outside of town. In my storytime hour children didn’t get the big picture but I know a little girl at home who will understand and love it.  The illustrations are whimsical and kindergarten students loved the repitition.  5 stars 

3. the cow loves cookies by karma wilson and marcellus hall. (2010)

I’ve come to expect great things, usually rhyming things, from Mrs. Wilson as she is the author of The Bear Snores on series of books.  This one didn’t disappoint.  All the other animals on the farm eat what the farmer gives them-the horse loves hay, the chickens; chicken feed, the pigs love their slop but the cow…she gets special treatment.  Students loved learning why the cow loves cookies…because she shares her milk with the farmer and he shares his cookies.  Milk and cookies go so well together.  I wish I had some for my lunch today!  5 stars
